The Sandusky/Ottawa County Master Gardener Volunteers, OSU Extension have again organized and are pleased to promote a plastic recycling program in Sandusky and Ottawa Counties.  

When:  May 1, 2010 - October 31, 2010

Who:  Gardeners, Farmers, Homeowners, Business Owners, etc

Meltable Items accepted include:

• Pots, flats, trays, cell packs, nursery tubs, etc. (soil and plant material removed)
• Plastic sheeting, stretch wrap, empty and crushed beverage bottles, milk jugs, plastic grocery bags (securely bundled), plastic toys (e.g. outdoor play equipment and toys w/o metal parts)

Items not accepted include:

• Medical supplies, garden or agricultural chemical containers

Purpose Green, a post consumer recycling company in Norwalk, Ohio, will process the collected plastic waste.  This material is then re-manufactured into other products here in the U.S. 

The Master Gardeners would like to educate and motivate the general pulbic in joining in an effort to reduce landfill waste by re-using a non-biodegradable material that will benefit everyone.

Just the Facts:

• In Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Solid Waste District alone, approx. 26,000 tons of plastics are land filled each year.
• At $35.00 a ton, the cost of disposing of plastics in the OSS District is $900,000 annually.
• Research shows that one ton of recycled plastic saves approx. 685 gallons of oil.
